John Kelly, Irish painter and printmaker, 1932-2006

Press Cuttings Independent Artists Show

The Independent Artists are by now fairly established, as with most of the better young men in their ranks.

One is tempted to describe them as a young men’s Living Art, but as several of them exhibit with the senior group, this is hardly a fair description. Their latest show, at the Dublin Municipal Gallery, is uneven but highly interesting, with some new names.

John Kelly’s large “Sacrifice” catches the eye straight away, and reins it, which is something more. He is growing in subtlety and technique; the occasional incoherence and clumsiness of a few years back are vanishing. “Deposition” has the same brooding note, and I liked too his ink and pastels.
